How to Start Investing in Mutual Funds

Updated 26 Aug 2026

The mechanics of starting are straightforward and mostly one-time. The decisions that matter are made before you invest a rupee.

1. Complete KYC

Mutual fund KYC is centralised, so once completed with any registered intermediary it applies across all AMCs. It needs identity and address proof, PAN and a bank account in your name. Most platforms complete it digitally.

2. Choose your route

  • Direct from the AMC's own website — direct plan, no commission, one login per AMC.
  • A direct-plan platform — direct plans across AMCs in one place.
  • A distributor or bank — convenient and advised, but a regular plan with commission built in.

3. Decide before you pick a fund

Settle the horizon and the asset class first. Money needed within three years belongs in debt; long-horizon money can take equity risk. The specific fund matters far less than getting this split right.

4. A reasonable first holding

For a long-horizon first investment, a broad index fund or a large-cap or flexi-cap fund is a defensible starting point: diversified, comparatively low cost, and not dependent on one sector. Start with a SIP you can sustain, and add complexity only once you have lived through a market fall.
